Office Environment

Considerations should take into account temperature, humidity, noise etc, which all can have an effect on employee performance, health & welfare.

For example if an office temperature is too high the staff will be uncomfortable and this may well have an affect on their work. Also if humidity levels are wrong employees may feel tired and lethargic which is hardly the best environment for workers who are often working to deadlines.

Computers

It is essential to ensure that computer workstations are well designed taking into account keyboard, screen, layout, software, desk and chair to name just some. The main problems in this area are concerning muscular skeletal disorders which occur over a period of time and could result in an employee being permanently injured and pressing through a substantial claim for compensation.

Hotels

A primary consideration in this industry is fire precautions, and signs and signals. All to often the basic requirements become neglected over time with companies sometimes becoming complacent, I am sure that this is not intentional but with staff turnover and people moving to other branches etc it is all to easy to assume that the premises are fully compliant and that staff are fully aware of current policy & procedures.

It can be fatal to fall into this trap and we would recommend that regular assessments are carried out to ensure good practice.

Machine guards must be in place and used by staff suitable PPE (personal protective equipment) must be issued as identified by risk assessments, this PPE should be compatible, well maintained, and suitable for the job.

Assessments of first aid provisions is a primary concern not only in engineering but in all workplaces. Adequate first aiders and first aid equipment must be supplied as identified in the risk assessment.
